CB (Centre-Back)

A Centre-Back (CB) is the central figure in the defense, tasked with protecting the goal from opposition attacks. Their primary role is to block shots, make tackles, and intercept passes, while maintaining a strong defensive shape. Centre-Backs are usually strong, tall, and excellent in aerial duels, allowing them to clear crosses and defend against set-pieces. A solid CB forms the backbone of a team’s defensive structure, providing stability and resilience against attacking threats.

In modern football, Centre-Backs also contribute to the build-up play, using their passing ability to distribute the ball from the back and help transition the ball into attack. Communication, leadership, and anticipation are vital attributes, as CBs often organize the defense, direct teammates, and read the game to prevent opposing threats before they materialize. A CB’s ability to anticipate danger, win duels, and clear the ball effectively is crucial to keeping the team secure.

CB Types

Wide Centre-Back

The Wide Centre-Back is typically used in three-back formations and operates closer to the flanks. They support both central defense and occasionally push up to aid wing play. Comfort with one-on-one situations and defending wide areas is essential for this role.

Ball-Playing Centre-Back

The Ball-Playing Centre-Back is skilled in passing and comfortable with the ball at their feet. They initiate attacks from the back, distributing long passes or even carrying the ball forward to create offensive opportunities. This type of CB contributes significantly to building play from defense.

Sweeper

The Sweeper is positioned slightly behind the defensive line, clearing loose balls, intercepting passes, and providing cover. Sweepers require excellent positioning, pace, and the ability to read the game to prevent threats from developing.

Libero

Similar to a sweeper but more versatile, the Libero operates as an additional playmaker from the back. Often moving forward into midfield to support attacks, they require high technical skill, vision, and tactical awareness to balance both defensive and offensive duties.

Sweeper-Keeper Support

This CB works alongside a goalkeeper who plays high, providing additional cover when the keeper is further out. The Sweeper-Keeper Support role anticipates quick clearances and passes behind the defense, ensuring protection of the last line.

Aerial Dominant Centre-Back

The Aerial Dominant Centre-Back specializes in winning headers and clearing crosses. These players are tall, strong, and excel in aerial duels, making them essential in defending set-pieces and aerial challenges.

No-Nonsense Centre-Back

The No-Nonsense Centre-Back focuses purely on defending. They prioritize clearing the ball safely and effectively, without taking unnecessary risks. This direct approach offers stability to the defense and provides a reliable option for clearing danger.

Stopper

The Stopper is tasked with marking opposing forwards closely and aggressively breaking up attacks. They play a physical role in defense, excelling in duels and aerial challenges to prevent scoring opportunities for the opposition.
